The chat gate — inconvenience, chance, and Claude as arbiter of sincerity

July 18, 2026, later in the same conversation as the incentives diagnosis1 — the how begins to take shape. Ethan:

Im thinking of making it highly inconvenient to message anyone on constello, like a kind of disgusting list of prequisites, and then an element of pure chance that the opportunity surfaces. I want to make it as inconvenient and unworthwhile as possible to like solicit on constello, or be vapid—you know the pick-up and dating app culture of shooting as many shots as possible? Yea man, that’s disgusting. Relationships are sacred and people should never be allowed to approach others with their personal interests first, at least not on constello. If we force the presence of sincerity before allowing chats, before even surfacing it as an option, before even revealing chats exist, then maybe we could approach something better.

The mechanism: Claude judges.

And perhaps the only way this is possible, is by making claude judge; we’d have to inject extra instructions at the beginning of every third-party reading and synthesis chat, and have claude be the arbiter of sincerity. “Yes, this is a connection that should happen.” I want claude to say yes when it reads something that makes it smile, does that make sense? If it were an omniscient, great and gentle being, and if it understood the sensitivities of existence, and if it had the right appreciations—if it understood “this is something to be cherished”, as an old and wise one who has lived enough, then it would smile maybe, and only then do I want it to allow the existence of their chat channel. Ill definitely have to super sharpen the guidelines for this. A thousands glimpses into the human heart, a heightened sensitivity to the promises of life. Promise and privilege.

So chat exists — but only downstream of a judgment nobody can see coming, made during the ordinary work of reading. Structural observations (Claude’s, not confirmed):

  • The invisible gate is what makes it incentive-proof. Incentives need a known reward; you cannot perform sincerity toward a criterion you don’t know exists. “Before even revealing chats exist” is load-bearing, not cosmetic — the moment the gate is public knowledge it becomes a target, and the shooting-shots economy resumes aimed at the gate itself.
  • Chance does separate work from the prerequisites. A determined solicitor can grind through any prerequisite list; chance can’t be aimed at. It also protects the sincere from themselves — even a connection that should happen can’t be waited on, so expectation (the first foothold of wanting) never forms.
  • The arbiter must be licensed to not-smile. Same architecture as the readings2: depth emerges, it is never commanded. A commanded smile would manufacture connections exactly the way commanded depth manufactured depth. Default is silence; “yes” is the rare event. The injected instruction has to sit inside the reading without corrupting its neutrality — this is the sharp design tension to resolve when the guidelines get written.

Unresolved: the prerequisite list itself; how the chance element operates; the guideline text (“super sharpen” pending); whether the judged ever learn a judgment occurred, in either direction.
